Burke’s Peerage Foundation was established 5 January 2014 on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir John Bernard Burke, CB whose father John Burke founded Burke’s Peerage in 1826. Burke’s Peerage Foundation was registered 5 February 2014 as a charity (1155658) in the United Kingdom to advance the education of the public in the subject of genealogy and personal heritage.

CHAIRMAN
William Bortrick

William Bortrick became fascinated with genealogy as a child while listening to anecdotes and reminiscences of his father. Early on he was encouraged by Harry, 23rd Lord Borthwick and Dr Otto von Habsburg. Later he studied history at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, where he served as a member of the governing Council. In the ensuing years he has developed a knowledge of the genealogy of historical families worldwide. He established Burke’s Peerage Foundation to encourage all, but especially young people, to take a greater interest in genealogy and heritage.

VICE CHAIRMAN
Mark James Ayre, FRSA

Mark has since his early years enjoyed hearing stories about his family, and especially from his innovative grandfather. He studied design and engineering at university. He has diverse interests including architecture, art, genealogy and history. He is Managing Director of a company providing bespoke services arranging cultural and heritage activities in the British Isles. Receiving a High Sheriff’s Award as a young man was a source of inspiration to him; he sees Burke’s Peerage Foundation as a way of encouraging enthusiastic individuals of all ages to succeed. His other pursuits include adventure training, mountain biking, skydiving and travel.
